As the leader in powder coating in Indianapolis, we work with a variety of different types of powders when coating manufacturing and industrial equipment.  While each type of powder has a range of color options and unique benefits, we’re going to focus today on Epoxy.

If you’re unfamiliar with Epoxy, or weren’t even aware that there were multiple types of powders used during powder coating, read on to learn more!

Why is Epoxy Powder Coating?

When it comes to powders, epoxies were the first to be widely used in the industry. The powder itself is durable, offers optimal harness and has, in our opinion, the best corrosion and chemical resistance of all the powders that are available.

During the powder coating process, epoxies adhere to metal surfaces flawlessly — we make epoxies adhere even better by first sandblasting the equipment or tools, leaving a clean and smooth surface behind.

Due to the adhesion strength and resistance to corrosion, a wide range of primers are epoxies. Many will choose to use epoxy-based primers underneath another finishing type to get all of the advantages epoxies offer without any of the disadvantages.

Here are a few additional advantages of using epoxies over other powders:

  • Can be baked at low temperatures
  • Offers a full range of gloss finishes
  • Allows for a variety of cure schedules

Are There Any Drawbacks to Choosing Epoxy Powders?

As with all powders, epoxies do have a few drawbacks. For one, they don’t weather all that well and exposure to the sun and the elements can cause epoxy-based finishes to chalk and fade.

Their lack of ability to weather well is really the only reason to avoid epoxies, as they can begin to degrade on the surface after only a couple of months. With that said, as long as your pieces remain indoors, epoxies are ideal.

Are There Any Other Types of Powder Coating?

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, there are a variety of different types of powders used during powder coating, including:

  • Fluoropolymers
  • Polyesters
  • Urethane

…and more. The powder you choose will weigh heavily on the industrial tools or equipment you’re powder coating and what your specific needs are.
